short story boot camp

Craft a single short story in just three hours

  • 200 US dollars
  • Zoom

Service Description

Ready to flex your writing muscles? Unlike my regular boot camp (which is a 5-day series) we’ll focus on crafting a single short story in just three hours — whether you’re writing from memory or imagination. It could be flash fiction, a children’s book a mini-memoir or essay. This is instant gratification, if you’re up for it. I’ll provide targeted and guided writing prompts that will help you jump right into your story, including: • how to start your story • character development • scene-setting • crafting your dialogue • how to end your story This boot camp is for those who want to get that first draft down on paper with the help and inspiration of other writers. It's known as generative writing and is inspired by expertly crafted writing prompts and will spur the imagination. Are you up for it? Are you ready to fill your page? Sign up for my three-hour workshop. Maximum 8 participants. Minimum: 3 participants. See booking calendar for available dates and review cancellation policy before booking. Please double check your local times here: www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html. About Jo: Everyone is, indeed, a writer. I just happened to make a living at it. Starting out as a copywriter at a New York City advertising agency, I eventually reached the role of Executive Creative Director. I’ve mentored and worked alongside teams of writers and art directors as we created print campaigns, websites, Facebook apps, radio and TV spots and more. These days, I telecommute from Sedona, Arizona, and am also an Amherst Writers & Artists Affiliate, certified to lead workshops in the AWA method, as described in Writing Alone & With Others by Pat Schneider, Oxford University Press. To honor the 20th anniversary of 9/11 attack on New York, I published my memoir: I still carry you around: A moment-by-moment account of the week that changed New York City and me forever.

For paid workshops: Each workshop has a limited number of people to ensure that everyone gets time to write, present their work, give feedback and truly develop their craft. Because of that, it's important that people commit to attending. Whether it's an 8-week workshop or a one-day retreat, it's important that we get a solid head count before starting. And for those signing up for a free workshop, please be courteous and notify me if you do not plan to attend so that we can make space for others. For paid workshops, there will be no refunds after two weeks prior to the workshops, unless you find someone to take your place. If you meet those requirements, a full refund will be issued, less a $15 processing fee. No refunds will be issued for missed sessions. For paid consultations/appointments: Clients can reschedule up to 3 days in advance of our meeting. Bookings must be paid for before the session begins, unless a different agreement has been made by both parties. No refunds will be issued for missed appointments.
